Parishioners of St. Benedict and Divine Mercy parishes met together on May 17, 2025 with the purpose of Reimagining Our Future given anticipated changes to take place in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oakland. Our discussions focused on how we Manifest our Faith, the state of our Current Reality and what we would need to do to Prepare for Our Future. Recall that on Sunday July 27, we provided an update about the themes we identified associated with Manifesting our Faith. Today’s message provides an update about themes which focus on our Current Reality. These themes include the following:
Our Current Reality
- Building Community - We need to honor cultural traditions and preserve our uniqueness while embracing unity. We need to work together as a faith family, engaging our youth more and recognizing the spiritual and societal needs of everyone.
- Communications - Decisions are made and not shared. There is a lack of transparency from our diocese. We need to dialogue more to keep all parishioners informed of matters of importance to us all and demand more transparency from the diocese about the future.
- Fear and Concern - We are in fear of losing our cultural identities. We are concerned about the prospect of closing facilities which includes the closure of St. Paschal Baylon and loss of the charter schools at St. Benedict and St. Lawrence O’Toole. We fear loss of identity of our unique cultures and are concerned about decisions of the diocese that will have an impact on our future.
- Engagement - Our Spanish community shared that we need to consider our total community in decision making. There is a need for a pastoral leader for them. There needs to be an official Hispanic Pastoral Council. The special needs of the Spanish community should be considered to maintain a vibrant Spanish presence as some members of their community may feel left out.
- Opportunity for Change - We need more engagement of parishioners as lectors and greeters. We need more deacons, and we need to include women as deacons. We need more priests. We need to figure out how to blend ministries to enhance our unique cultural identities, honoring the uniqueness of our identities and styles of worship. We need to create more opportunities to engage our youth.
Our next announcement is scheduled for Sunday September 21. At that time, we will share themes about how we plan to Prepare for Our Future. In addition, we will share information about our next combined Parish meeting which in planned for Saturday September 27 at St. Paschal Baylon. We may have more clarification about decisions arising from the Bankruptcy proceedings and will explore what we can do to maintain the vitality of our parishes.

1ST THING:
For those of you who have St. Benedict GATE remotes,
we need to get them all checked and reprogramed.
Please connect with our Building Manager, Mr. Jules Garibaldi so that your remotes are verified and working properly.
2ND THING:
Everyone's safety is Top Priority when driving onto St. Benedict Grounds.
We HIGHLY recommend that when you're driving into the Parking Lot from 82nd Ave. that you enter the Parking Lot turning RIGHT ONLY! NO LEFT TURNS into or out of the 82nd Ave. Gate.
When exiting the Parking Lot, easiest, safest and highly recommended option is to exit from Atherton St. - Bancroft Ave. Gate exit nearest the school. But if there is a situation where that gate is not available due to the School being in session, when exiting the 82nd Gate, PLEASE turn RIGHT ONLY.
This is for your safety. Numerous folks have suffered from car accidents trying to make a left turn onto 82nd Ave.
Please refer to the Site Map shown below:
LAST THING:
As of July 31 we are at 51.38% of our $12,200 goal.
We are truly grateful to all who have helped us get this far and to all who continue to show support week after week! We still have until the end of the year to reach our goal. Remember, any collected earnings exceeding our goal returns back to St. Benedict to be used for the needs of our Parish site.
May God bless you abundantly,
Fr. Jayson J. Landeza
